Support Programs and Survivorship Education

Support programs and survivorship education at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center give cancer patients and their families the chance to interact with physicians, health care professionals and experts in the community. Participants may discuss a variety of topics, including diagnosis, treatment, new research, communication and coping skills, community resources, and mind/body approaches to treatment. These programs provide a safe, non-threatening environment where patients with common interests and concerns can learn from each other. All programs are provided free of charge and are held in Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center conference room. For more information call (908) 237-2337.

 

Support Programs and Resources

Look Good... Feel Better:
This single session program helps women undergoing cancer treatment learn to manage the appearance changes that may occur. A licensed cosmetologist will teach hands-on makeup techniques, as well as skin and nail care. All participants receive an array of complimentary cosmetics and skin care products. This program was founded by the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association Foundation in partnership with the American Cancer Society and the National Cosmetology Association. It is offered alternating months and is hosted by Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center. Registration is required; please call 1-800-ACS-2345 for dates and times.

Wigs & Accessories: 
Recognizing the importance of personal apperance and body image in the recovery process of women with cancer, the American Cancer Society, Patient & Family service Department & Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center have developed and sponsored this program for you. Join us for information on how to select a wig, wig care and how to style scarves. Free new wigs, a wig kit and seasonal hats are available to women who are in need and do not have insurance coverage. Pre-registration is required. Partners In Healing:
Partners In Healing is a group of cancer survivors who volunteer to provide peer support to patients currently undergoing cancer treatment. These men and women receive specialized training to enhance their communication and listening skills.

The objective of this volunteer program is to match a Partners In Healing volunteer with a patient who has a similar diagnosis or who is in similar circumstances. Volunteers visit with patients at Hunterdon Medical Center, outpatients at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center, and provide support via telephone.

Patients may request a visit from a Partners In Healing volunteer through their physician, oncology social worker, nurse or any other staff at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center. If you would like to speak to or receive a visit contact the Partners In Healing Helpline at (908) 788-2527.

Treatment Orientation:
Treatment Orientation is an educational program designed for new patients and caregivers.  Staff from each department are available to answer questions about the services we provide.  To register, please call (908) 788-6547 or inquire at the Front Desk.

This program is conducted by The Wellness Community. It is open to cancer survivors, who have completed their active treatment between one month and two years ago and have no evidence of disease

Central New Jersey Prostate Network: Empowerment Through Learning

Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center is a member of the Central New Jersey Prostate Network.  This is a collaborative between leading area healthcare and service organizations committed to providing education on prostate health issues to men who live in Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon, and Morris counties.  The network brings the best professionals from each organization to provide in-depth and up-to-date education on topics of importance.  The meetings also provide an opportunity for men to network around issues relevant to their health.  We invite you to attend the quarterly meetings.  Hosted by the participating institutions, meetings are rotated throughout the region.  Call (908) 237-2337 for more information.

 


 

Community Education

The Community Resource Center: The Community Resource Center at the Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center is a free service available to patients, families and all members of the community who have an interest in learning more about cancer.

The Resource Center includes books, audiobooks, and relaxation and guided imagery CD's. You may browse through these materials conveniently located in the lobby of the cancer center, use them while receiving treatment in the chemo bay, or sign them out through the front desk.
