Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center Receives Grant from Central and South Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

Published June 18, 2010

The Central and South Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded a $14,303.00 grant to Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center for continued outreach and education for the women of Hunterdon County.

At Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center, the grant from Komen for the Cure will support the “Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center’s VIP Program” an initiative to increase the rate of screening mammography in Hunterdon County women, age 65 and older. The program will involve a group education program, guidance to arrange a mammogram, and an incentive reward for those women who do complete their screening.

Approximately 60% of breast cancer deaths occur in women 65 and older.  “Early detection is a vital component to reduce the mortality associated with breast cancer, especially in this high risk population.  It is the goal of this program to identify any barriers that may be prohibiting a woman from obtaining a mammogram, improve the screening rates in Hunterdon County, and ultimately reduce the incidence of late stage breast cancer at time of diagnosis” states Mary Vecchio RN, MSN, APN,OCN,  grant project director.  If anyone is interested in having this program offered to their group please contact Mary Vecchio at (908) 788-2546.

Key community programs like Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center’s VIP Program receive funding from events that Komen Central and South Jersey Affiliate holds throughout the year including the Komen Central and South Jersey Race for the Cure scheduled for Sunday, October 3, 2010 at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ.  Nearly twenty thousand participants will participate in what has grown into the largest 5K race in New Jersey.

As a result, the Komen Central and South Jersey Affiliate has invested more than $20 million in community breast cancer programs in its service area of the 13 central and southern counties of New Jersey. Up to 75 percent of net proceeds generated stay in these 13 counties. The remaining 25 percent goes to national breast cancer research.
