Cyndy Martinez, RN, CEN, a nurse in the Emergency Department at Hunterdon Medical Center was selected to be part of a medical team that will travel to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti for 2 weeks, leaving February 4th as part of Project Helping Hands. Ms. Martinez will help provide emergency health and medical care to people in Haiti.
In order for Ms. Martinez to be part of this medical mission, she needed to raise $1500. With time not on her side, she set out a letter writing and phone call campaign to friends, colleagues and the business community. On Monday, January 26th the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce presented Ms. Martinez with a check for $1100 and her friends and colleagues at Hunterdon Medical Center contributed $1600 to help her exceed her fundraising goal. The $2700 she raised will help fund her trip and will help Project Helping Hands purchase medical supplies.
“This came together so quickly, I am so grateful to the Chamber of Commerce and my friends at Hunterdon Medical Center for their generous support. Details of my trip are coming together daily. I know I will be staying in a missionary compound just outside of Port-Au-Prince and will be working with medical agencies in field hospitals and temporary clinics. The compound is secured and has running water, beds and meals will be provided,” stated Martinez. Martinez went on to say, “I am overwhelmed by all the support at both Hunterdon Medical Center and in Hunterdon County. People keep thanking me for what I am doing and I just feel that I am a liaison or link in the chain of good will.” This is her second trip with Project Helping Hands. In 2008, she traveled to Kenya, Africa to work with children with Aids and provide health education.
